The Headland Surgery, Hartlepool

Overview

  • HartlepoolThe practice is the only GP practice located in the Headland part of Hartlepool which is now planned for regeneration. Sites within this area are at a premium.

  • The existing Doctors premises are split and converted domestic properties. These are inadequate in space and incapable of supporting the delivery of modern healthcare.

  • To source and develop a new site for a new four Doctor Practice with an operating suite and pharmacy.

CPA’s Approach

  • Liaison with the Headland representatives on the community, councillors, regeneration managers, PCT managers, GP’s and other stakeholders to agree the site location.

  • Site appraisals of potential locations for the surgery.

  • Extensive discussions with District Valuer and local estates department of the Council.

  • Initial scoping and outline design for the surgery.

  • Appointment of the design team.

  • Overall project management of the design and procurement stages.

Outcomes

  • The new £1.3 million facility was successfully completed in November 2005.

  • The new accommodation makes best use of a tight site and includes:
    - A new Doctors Surgery on two floors. The unit has a fully compliant theatre, recovery and assessment unit on the first floor and a mix of consulting and treatment rooms on the ground floor.
    - A separate pharmacy is located adjacent to the new surgery on its own site.

  • The building design had to meet conservation area requirements and the site was subject to archaeological surveys.

  • Residents of Hartlepool and particularly the Headland now have a bespoke healthcare facility that is modern attractive and accessible.

  • A far cry from the old run down, cramped and inadequate premises that prevailed.

“CPA have been an essential part of our team and without them I don’t think we would ever have got the new surgery built” Simon Neil, Practice Manager
