Boy, 9, beat leukaemia but died after lung infection caused by building work

A child undergoing leukaemia treatment died of a lung infection because he was immune-suppressed and unable to fight it.  The cause of the lung infection was dust containing Aspergillus fungal spores, and had come from building work being carried out nearby.                                             
The risks from Aspergillus are well known, and precautions should be taken when dust-creating building works are carried out, particularly when they are close to vulnerable patients.
Advice and guidance is freely available, and infection control departments should be able to advise.

The Health and Safety Executive have published the sixth edition of Approved Code of Practice L5 (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health). Read More for a free download of the document 

The revisions arise from the Lofstedt review of health and safety regulations in 2011. The revised ACOP is intended to clarify and simplify practical advice to help dutyholders comply with the requirements of COSHH, to reflect other ongoing reviews of technical guidance associated with COSHH and clarify specialist terminology, where possible. It also takes account of regulatory changes following the introduction of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) regulations and the CLP (classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures) regulations.

CPA Director, Richard Knight, Appointed Chair of the IHEEM Ventilation Technical Platform

Richard Knight, a Director of CPA Solutions spoke at the IHEEM conference on 9th October, he was one of four speakers exploring the impact of the Health and Social Care Act on the Estates community.

Richard has also been appointed as the chair of the IHEEM Ventilation Technical Platform.  This is the focus area for technology matters relating to the subject.  Richard is also a founder member and current chair of the CIBSE Healthcare Group.
