An Engineer by profession, which explains his obsession with detail, Steve has over 30 years experience at a senior level as an estates professional in the NHS, including 15 as head of department. Most of this time has been working with the health service in East Gloucestershire, contributing to the development of a high-performing first wave Trust which always achieved three-star ratings.
Steve has contributed to estates and facilities development at a national level, being involved in a wide variety of national working groups and associations, and has developed special interests in engineered environments, asset management and maintenance, strategic planning and staff development and training.
Steve’s last NHS post was as Director of Property and Medical Engineering for the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust, which included the role of head of the estates shared service for the six Gloucestershire NHS Trusts. This post was subsequent to the restructuring of healthcare in the county. He left at the point at which the Trust became a Foundation Trust.
He has since worked with Eastwood Park Training Centre, developing their range of training courses for efm staff, and their interests in overseas healthcare. This has resulted in a good knowledge of the Malaysian health system, and a working knowledge of a diverse range of health economies around the world.
For relaxation, Steve has an obsessive interest in medieval history, particularly that of northern Europe and the Baltic sea, and is the author of a book on the Battle of Tewkesbury. In his spare time, he is involved in a whole range of community activities rightly described as ‘fringe’.
